Darnell Waine is a 36 year old painter born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. He works primarily in oil and acrylics. His work aims to explore the complexities of being human at the level of the individual. The anatomical heart and humanoid heart-headed figure, aka Krymson, are the main motifs he uses to express what he considers to be the deepest truths of the human experience: emotional & psychological isolation, true & false self reckoning and individuation.

Krymson is a character I developed to embody my philosophy of base human nature and existence. The anatomical heart as the head, represents his fragile identity but his human essence: personal truth. Krymson is young, sensitive, and emotionally volatile. He feels deeply and so he’s suffered much, hence the bandages he’s covered in. The heart shaped cavity in his chest represents his deepest self he’s yet to discover. So to him, it’s an empty void, but in reality that void is actually his unlimited, unrealized potential. I’m my paintings, I depict Krymson going thru the process mentioned above, struggling to face and accept himself, flaws and all. The feelings he battles are shown as “traditional” shaped hearts, with various facial expression, based on Krymson’s various conflicting emotions. Although these emotions tend to oppose him, they are still products of him, and so he is responsible for their existence. Krymson’s ultimate task: confront himself wholeheartedly, accept his humanity entirely, and win the battle against his shadow self by bringing his shadow into the light.
