Elegast is the King of the Elves and dwells in the forest. He draws his name from an early Dutch poem. He is a noble hero as well as a thief and, we might guess, a mischief maker.
We recently moved from the middle of town to the land of my husband’s childhood. Our home is surrounded by beautiful woods - green, vibrant and filled with life. About a hundred feet from our back door is a game cam strapped to a tree. At midnight in the woods, it captures ghostly figures of deer and coyotes, bunnies and skunks, armadillos and those who would chase them.
As I sit on our back porch, watching as dusk gathers and darkness descends, I listen to these new to me voices of nature. Was that a coyote or a cicada? Or perhaps a fairy…
Outside my studio window is a stately white oak estimated to be 400 years old. I imagine the woodland folk who have gathered at midnight to dance at its roots since the time of Shakespeare, and the magic and mischief they must create.
